Canada Visa Application
Which visa is suitable for my trip to Canada?
If you’re from a visa-required country and need documentation to enter Canada, you should apply for a Temporary Resident Visa, also known as a visitor visa. There are two types: a single-entry visa and a multiple-entry visa, both valid for a fixed period and must not be used after expiry. The multiple-entry visa allows multiple entries within its validity, up to 10 years, or one month before passport expiry. The single-entry visa permits one entry; after leaving, a new visa is needed to return to Canada. If your visa is valid and you’re directly travelling to the U.S. or St. Pierre and Miquelon, no new visa is required. If the visa expires before returning from this area and you lack other valid status, a new temporary resident visa is necessary.
Is a visa required for transit through Canada without any stops or visits?
Certain countries’ citizens need visas to enter Canada, including a Transit Visa for travelling through Canada without stopping. This applies even if the stay is less than 48 hours, and there’s no fee for the Transit Visa. However, if travelling to or from the United States, the Transit Without Visa program (TWOV) and China Transit Program (CTP) may exempt you from a Canadian transit visa under specific conditions, including holding a valid U.S. visa, using an approved airline, and transiting through a participating Canadian international airport.
How do I help a family member or friend apply to visit Canada?
Individuals from temporary resident visa-required countries visiting Canada must first apply from outside the country. The application is submitted to the Canadian visa office in their respective country or region, where a visa officer will review and decide on the visa issuance. To support the application, you can provide a letter of invitation explaining the assistance you’ll provide, such as covering expenses for travel or accommodation. However, it’s important to note that a letter of invitation does not guarantee the approval of the visa.
How do I get help if my visa application is refused?
Regrettably, there is no official appeal process for a denied Temporary Resident Visa application. Nevertheless, you have the option to re-apply, considering the reasons for the initial refusal. By addressing these reasons and building a more robust case, you can enhance your chances of success.
I have a visa. What can I expect when I arrive in Canada?
Upon reaching the Canadian port of entry, a border services officer will verify your eligibility for entry. Your stay will be authorized through the stamping of your passport or the issuance of another document by the officer. In the absence of a stamp, handwritten date, or document in your passport, your temporary resident status will conclude six months from your arrival in Canada. If you possess a visitor record, student, or work permit, the expiration date is indicated on the respective document.
USA Visa Application
How long should my passport be valid to apply for a U.S. visa?
You need a passport that remains valid for travel to the United States, extending at least six months beyond your planned stay in the country.
I’ve recently changed my name. Does my U.S. visa, issued under my previous name, remain valid?
If your name changes legally due to marriage, divorce, or a court order, it’s advised to obtain a new passport. Once you have the new passport, it’s recommended to apply for a new U.S. visa for smoother travel to and from the United States.
What can I expect upon entering the United States?
Travelers should receive a blank Customs Declaration form 6059B from their airline, and only one form is required for a family traveling together. While a visa doesn’t guarantee entry into the United States, it allows foreign citizens to request permission upon arrival. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials have the authority to permit or deny entry and determine the length of stay. The process is now automated, with travelers receiving a CBP admission stamp indicating important details. For verification purposes, a copy of the I-94 can be obtained from www.cbp.gov/I94. Additional admission information can be found on the CBP Website.
How can I comprehend and interpret the information on my visa?
Upon receiving your visa, verify that all the personal information printed on it is accurate. If there are discrepancies or inaccuracies compared to your passport, contact the issuing authority promptly. Note that the visa’s expiration date signifies the last day for entry, not the duration of stay. The Department of Homeland Security at your entry port determines the length of your stay, provided you adhere to their conditions. Compliance with these conditions ensures a smooth stay in the United States.
